Turning sound into art

Sound wave art is an artistic representation of sound. Sound wave art turns sounds—including music, singing, voices, and other audio—into an artistic piece that can be placed on any wall in your home. Sound wave art can be made with a variety of colours and styles in mind, ranging from an elegant monochromatic look to something in vibrant, fun shades and colours. This activity can be developed individually by learners or as a pair activity (2 learners). Teacher shall maintain a close screw of the work performed by the learners.

Pandemic Tracker

In this challenge, students will use available data on the COVID 19 pandemic with an Excel spreadsheet to create graphics that show the evolution throughout time according to different parameters. Students will learn the basics of descriptive statistics.

This activity should be developed in groups of 3 learners. Teachers should help maintain the motivation of the learners particularly when they are struggling with the Excel tool or with the data interpretation.

Fractal Art

Fractals are mathematical constructs that have self-similarity, that is, they look the same at different levels as can be seen in successive magnifications of a fractal set. In this challenge, students will learn about the basic mathematical concept behind fractals and will generate artistic fractal images using an online tool.

This activity should be developed in groups of 2 or 3 learners. Teachers should help maintain the motivation of the learners particularly when they are struggling with the mathematical concept or the online tool.

Desert Rover

In this challenge, students build a rubber-band-powered rover that can move linearly. Students will follow the engineering design process to design and build a rover out of cardboard, figure out how to use rubber bands to spin the wheels, and improve their design based on testing results. Learners will be aware of different processes that use energy to create motion and how that energy is used or dissipated (through friction, for instance).

This activity should be developed in groups of 2 or 3 learners. Teachers should help maintain the motivation of the learners particularly when they are struggling with their concept (the rover does not move or moves randomly).
