Turning sound into art

Print Resource
  • Resource Information

Abstract

Sound wave art is an artistic representation of sound. Sound wave art turns sounds—including music, singing, voices, and other audio—into an artistic piece that can be placed on any wall in your home. Sound wave art can be made with a variety of colours and styles in mind, ranging from an elegant monochromatic look to something in vibrant, fun shades and colours. This activity can be developed individually by learners or as a pair activity (2 learners). Teacher shall maintain a close screw of the work performed by the learners.

Learning Outcomes

The learners will learn how to use materials in order to make a soundwave art.

  • Organize a teamwork by dividing tasks and roles.
  • Social skills such as leadership, organizational conscience or communication.
  • Physics principles.
  • Art skills.
  • Capacity of implementing simple calculations and 3D perspective when developing projects.
  • Management of time and resources in order to fulfil the proposed objectives.
  • Social responsibility and awareness.
  • Mathematical knowledge by recognizing different measures, volumes and perspectives.
  • How to work in group.
  • How to understand physics principles.
  • How to create soundwave art.

Other Instructions

In 5 simple steps you will have your soundwave art: o Start off by cutting down the pallet wood to size. Use an A4 label sheet so that is the largest you can print it the image. So, cut the wood just oversized at around 32cm long. Then sand down the pallet board with the orbital sander. Start with 80 grit, and work your way up to 240 grit so it is nice and smooth. Keep in mind that it needs to be quite smooth for the ink to sink into the wood. o Use a sheet of A4 labels and remove all the labels. Put this into the printed the shiny side up. The glossy material on the paper stops any of the ink from drying meaning you can then transfer the image onto any other surface. o On the computer, flip the image before printing so when it is transferred to the wood it would be facing the right way. Trim off the excess of the paper to make it slightly easier to work with and put some masking tape on one end. Then, stuck this down to the pallet wood and begin to work the image onto the wood. Be very careful not to move the paper at all or this would have ruined the image. If this happens it’s not the end of the world, just sand it back and start again. o Used some spray polyurethane finish. It is important to use a spray finish, if you try to use a brush it will smudge the ink. Do a couple of layers of spray to add protection.
