Building a homemade tester for measuring water quality

Print Resource
  • Resource Information

Abstract

Many people are not satisfied with the taste and quality of the water they can access from their taps at home. Indeed, although health authorities ensure that tap water is fully suitable for human consumption (at least in most European countries) it is convenient to know how to check the purity of water at home.

Water from the tap contains mineral salts and other nutrients that usually are the ones that confer it a particular taste and smell. Water quality is measured according to several parameters, and national and international laws, which include chemical, physical, and biological properties. Parameters that are frequently sampled or monitored for water quality include temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, ORP, and turbidity.

With this activity learners will not only learn how to make a water quality tester but also about the components of water we access every day. This activity can be developed individually by learners or as a group activity, and it’s objective is to help the learners to develop an instrument which will be useful for measuring water quality, while they learn about its components.

Learning Outcomes

The learners will learn about science and engineering and, concretely, about which elements compose tap water and how to measure their quality level.

  • Identify scientific knowledge by understanding which elements compose tap water and at which are the parameters for the best possible quality.
  • Apply engineering knowledge by developing the tester.
  • Gain an insight on how to work in groups.
  • Demonstrate how to test tap water quality.
  • Develop scientific competences.
  • Develop engineering competences.
  • Manage time and resources (for achieving objectives)

Other Instructions

Steps for the construction

  1. Identify each element of the circuit; clarify what their functions are and how they operate in a circuit.
  2. Circuit diagram: build your circuit as shown in the picture. The sensors will be ready and waiting for the command to do the work.
  1. When connecting all the instruments the circuit should look something like this.
Besides, check to see if the GSM module blinks when you insert the Sim card in.
  1. When all sensors ready, upload the code unto the Arduino using the Arduino IDE software which you should have installed on your computer. If not you can download it online for free.
  2. Once the code is uploaded, try testing the sensors in a cup of water. Open the serial monitor on the Arduino IDE to view what the sensors are doing presently in real time.
  3. Wait for the text message after the sensor have completed the test, and compare the results obtained with the standard water quality parameters according to this article https://www.arroyoseco.org/wqparameters.htm
