Abstract
The idea of energy conservation has reached every corner of the globe. The irreversible damage we have caused to the earth has resulted in our growing concern to replace the consumption of non-renewable energy with sources of power that are much more environmentally-friendly.
One of the most popular recourse is solar energy, which can be transformed into hot water or electricity. For this activity, the focus will be placed on solar chargers, which are a device that work with a solar panel that charges the batteries of the circuit.
With this activity learners will not only learn about making a solar charger but they will also raise awareness on the topic of environment protection.
This activity can be developed individually by learners or as a group activity, and its objective is to raise awareness about renewable energies and teach the learner how to make a solar charger.
Learning Outcomes
The learners will learn about technology and engineering and, concretely, about how to create a solar charger while raising awareness about environmental protection.
- Extend technological and engineering knowledge about how to create the solar charger.
- How to adopt environmentally-friendly habits.
- Develop technological and engineering skills.
- Manage time and resources (for achieving objectives)
- Improve social skills such as leadership, organizational conscience and communication (if the challenge is solved in group)
Other Instructions
- Tinker the positive and negative terminals of the solar cell. Do it also with the diode anode, which is the terminal that does not have the black stripe.
- Now weld a cable to the diode cathode, preferably red or which somehow indicates positive. Moreover, weld a cable to the negative terminal of the solar cell.
- Check that there is current with the cables to verify the voltage.
- Weld the terminals, both negative and positive, of the battery-carrier
- Insert the rechargeable batteries; it is important that they are rechargeable since they have a slightly lower voltage than commercial ones.
- Charge in a well-lighted area and check if it works.
- Now you need to get an emergency charger that has USB input. Open it, inside you should de-solder the positive and negative terminals, and also the LEDs. Once it is done, remove them.
- Weld the positive wires on the positive terminal, and the negative wires on the negative one, and it is done!
