Abstract
Through this activity students will create a lip balm using natural materials. They will learn and approach, in this way, about different materials and their properties, and how to use them to create products we use daily, thus combining science and everyday life. Students will be using cocoa butter, which gives consistency and protects from the cold; wax, which regenerates and protects the skin, and oil, which works as lubricant.
This activity is to be developed individually, but it can also be developed in groups. It is focused on understanding the proprieties some natural materials have, and the way these properties can be useful for our daily life.
In this case, natural materials will be used in order to create a homemade lip balm, which will also provide students with a real alternative to using chemical made cosmetics.
Learning Outcomes
Learners will learn about science by focusing on the properties behind natural materials and their usefulness. These materials are easily accessible for everyone and contribute to create an alternative for chemical made cosmetics.
- Identify scientific explanation on the properties behind different natural materials.
- Demonstrate how to create a natural lip balm.
- Develop scientific skills.
- Manage time and resources (for achieving objectives)
Other Instructions
You will be able to create your own homemade lip in three simple steps: Firstly, you should take 10 g of cocoa butter for each 4g of beeswax, and heat them in a water bath (that is, not directly). You should stir until both substances are fully mixed and remove it from heat. Afterwards, you should add 5ml almond oil for each 10g of butter. Finally, you should let it cold down. Before it solidifies, if you want, you can add drops of some essence, depending on the aroma or properties that you want to achieve.
