Print Resource
  • Resource Information

Abstract

In this activity, learners will make their own natural soap with used oil with a very low cost and discover the effects of used oil on the nature. This activity should be applied partly at class partly at home. Learners will learn how to make ecologic soap by using used oil. Teachers can observe learners during application and pose some questions. After the preparation of the mixture, learners will be allowed to keep it at home for 6 weeks. After that, they will bring the soap at class and discuss their experiences.

Learning Outcomes

The learners will learn how to make eco-soap by using wasted oil.

  • Tell the harmful effects of wasted oil in the environment
  • Summarize the process realized to make the soap
  • List the steps to make a soap
  • Motivate themselves to use eco-friendly products
  • Apply the recipe to make eco-protecting soap
  • Make use of eco-protecting products to apply recipes
  • Explain the importance of using eco-friendly products to protect the environment
  • Provide solutions for waste pollution

Other Instructions

In 10 simple steps you will realize the experiment:

  • In glass cup, we melt the drain opener in pure water and mix it with a wooden stick.
  • Up to 150 degrees of temperature occurs. The mixture is left until it reaches room temperature.
  • When the glass warmed up by the mixture becomes a little warm and the solution becomes clear, we add the mixture to the oil.
  • Frying oil is added to the mixture when it has dropped to room temperature by mixing it with a wooden stick.
  • Mix it for half an hour until it becomes a paste.
  • Discuss with your peers how it turns into a soap.
  • Discuss also how used oil pollutes the environment.
  • The mixture is poured into a disposable container where it will take shape. The container, which is covered with stretch film, is also kept overnight under a towel and cover.
  • The next day, after it was removed from the towel and cling film, it turned into soap like 6 weeks. I hope you will be satisfied using it.
  • After 6 weeks, use it at home for 1 week. Then, bring it back to the class and discuss it with your friends.
