Creating homemade aromatic bath bombs for bath

Print Resource
  • Resource Information

Abstract

A bath bomb is the result of the mixture of different ingredients and of the shaping of that mixture into different geometrical forms, which becomes fizzy when it touches the water. Bath bombs are currently on trend because they offer a relaxing experience at home full of nice fragrances and bath salts. But what many people do not realize is that the fizz is the result of a chemical reaction taking place between different ingredients within the bath bomb.

With this activity learners will not only learn the process of making their own homemade bath bombs but also they will explore which combination of ingredients creates the fizz and how if the amounts are changed that could affects the fizziness of the bath bombs when throwing them into the water.

This activity can be developed individually by learners or as a group activity, and it’s objective is to demonstrate the learners how a simple wellness experience is created through a scientific phenomenon.

Learning Outcomes

The learners will learn about science and scientific experiments and, concretely, about how to mixture components in order to generate a scientific phenomenon.

  • Extend their scientific skills by understanding how the fizz is created and which components are used.
  • How to create a bath bomb.
  • Develop scientific skills.
  • Develop creativity.
  • Manage time and resources (for achieving objectives)
  • Improve social skills such as leadership, organizational conscience and communication (when the challenge is solved in group)

Other Instructions

  1. Insert the bicarbonate of soda, citric acid, cornflower and Epsom salt in a bowl and then whisk until they are fully mixed.
  2. Pour the base oil, essential oil and food coloring in another small bowl. Mix them together, making sure that the oil and the coloring are completely mixed.
  3. Very slowly add the oily mixture into the other bowl where dry ingredients are. Do it little by little and whisk the mixture between each addition.
  4. When the oil is added, add a few tiny drops of water and whisk the mixture again (it will fizz when you add the water, so do it quickly). Make sure the mixture is not too wet.
  1. If you’re adding peel or flower petals to decorate, drop them into the bottom of your mould. Pour the mixture tightly on top, pressing down and smoothing out the top with a teaspoon.
5. Leave your bath bomb in the mould to dry for 2-4 hrs, and then carefully remove it. It’s now ready to drop into the water.
