Kodukootud huulepalsam

Build a wildbee hotel

Bees are fantastic little insects with a big task; they pollinate many of our vegetables, fruit trees and berries. About a third of the food we eat comes from plants that bees and bumblebees pollinate. But food shortages, chemical pesticides and housing shortages threaten our most important food producers. This can have major consequences for the future. Fortunately, there are solutions to the problems! We can help spread knowledge about bees and inspire what we can do together to help them.

Help the wild bees and they will help you

Bees are sensitive insects and unfortunately, not all bees in, for instance Sweden, are doing well. There are 270 species of wild bees in Sweden and about one third of them are threatened or greatly reduced.
Thirteen of the threatened species have not been found in a long time and are believed to be extinct. In order for the bees to feel good, they need more and more flowering plants, are exposed to less chemical pesticides and enough habitats.

Check out the situation in your country!

Climate change: Plant a fruit tree

Addressing climate change requires dramatic changes to how we power our homes and factories and build our cities to how we feed our families and move around. Yet countries, businesses, states and cities have yet to make the deep structural economic and societal shifts that are required.

Human society and the global economy are inextricably linked to forests. More than 1 billion people depend on forests for their livelihoods. And forest ecosystems play a critical role in stabilizing the climate; providing food, water, wood products, and vital medicines; and supporting much of the world’s biodiversity.

There isn’t a silver bullet or a single pressure point to addressing the climate challenge. It will require an army of actors, a menu of options and an array of interventions in the right places, tailored to the unique opportunities at hand.    Source: World Resources Institute https://www.wri.org/

Climate change is an urgent threat to humanity that demands swift, decisive action.

Greta Thunberg speaks to us:

https://www.conservation.org/video/nature-now-video-with-greta-thunberg

In this activity, we learn more about the ability of trees to convert carbon dioxide and the importance of trees for biodiversity so we plant a tree.  This activity can be developed individually by learners or as a group activity that shall be focused on the importance of trees for the climate and for biodiversity.

Create ART from litter

The Clean Europe Network estimates that the total cost of cleaning up litter on the land throughout the EU is somewhere in the range of €10-13 billion. Including the cost of marine litter would boost that cost even higher. In this creative activity learners will become aware what we throw away in the local community and inspire fellow humans, through art, to change behavior. This activity is an idea and is very flexible. It is mainly shaped by the group and the supervisor together according to their circumstances.

This controversial activity can only be carried out if the group feels enthusiastic about the task and sees a purpose of illustrating how we throw things around us, through art.

Learners will be divided into groups who, in a given and suitable area – decided by the group, ca 1000 square meters of the local area, pick up all the garbage they find and weigh it and also find out what can be recycled and not.

The garbage will then become art in a Display for the purpose of awareness and inspiration and preferably located in a suitable center.

This activity can be modeled by the teacher in varying degrees of time and task. For example, you can immerse yourself in waste management in the local community. How and what is recycled? Visits to the local Waste station.
