Create your Dream House

Print Resource
  • Resource Information

Abstract

In this challenge, students build a 3D model of their dream house and then try to create it using cardboard and glue. Students will follow the engineering design process to design and build their house but they can also do it in teams using design thinking. They can later improve their design based on testing results.

This activity should be developed in groups of 2 or 3 learners. Teachers should help maintain the motivation of the learners particularly when they are struggling with the software.

Learning Outcomes

Skills and Competences

The learners can develop the following skills and competences:

  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Leadership
  • Communication and presentation skills
  • Designing a solution to a complex problem by breaking it into small, manageable problems
  • Apply the engineering design process to solve problems
  • Use Design Thinking as a creative scaffold
  • Management of time and resources

Knowledge

The following knowledge can be gathered by the learners:

  • Basic principles of 3D modelling
  • Basic principles of design
  • Basic principles of architecture
  • Basic principles of civil engineering

Other Instructions

  1. Follow the software tutorials on how to create a house model from scratch
  2. Then, make you house using the software. Start by the walls, windows and doors.
  3. When the house structure is ready, start thinking about the interior design.
  4. Create a cardboard model of your house structure.
  5. You can add other elements to the cardboard model (trees, cars, people, etc.)
