Abstract

Crystallization refers to the chemical process in which atoms or molecules are solidified into a highly structure form called crystal. Even it may seem unfamiliar to you, crystallization process is used widely, not in only in labs, but also for creating daily usable things.

Through this practical example learners will be able to learn about science and art, by creating their own earrings through crystallization.

This activity can be developed both, in groups or individually. It is focused on understanding science and chemical reactions while working with art, by creating crystallized colourful earrings.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will learn, through a practical activity, the logic behind chemical reactions as well as its usefulness for daily life.

  • Identify scientific knowledge by understanding what chemical reactions are and the logic behind them.
  • Demonstrate how to use chemical processes such as crystallization for creating daily useful objects.
  • Develop scientific skills.
  • Develop creativity and artistic skills.
  • Manage time and resources (for achieving objectives)
  • Improve social skills such as leadership, organizational conscience or communication (if the challenge is solved in group)

Other Instructions

This activity will encompass 7 steps:

  1. Pour 1 glass of water and two and a half glasses of sugar in a saucepan, and heat it to the maximum for 5-8 minutes, until it dissolves and stays yellow. Then remove it from the heat and let it cool down.
  2. Grab the pipe cleaner and make it the desirable shape according to your design. It can be something simple like a strip or a ball, or more complex figures. Your choice!
  3. Once you have the shape of the pipe cleaner, you must put it in a glass, so that it does not touch the bottom. To do this, take a stick and put it on top of the glass. Take a piece of string to tie the pipe cleaner to the stick, leaving it hanging inside the glass without touching the bottom. Once tasted, remove it from the glass, since first you have to develop another step.
  4. Take the mixture you have left cooling and fill the glass. Pour the dye of colouring on it.
  5. Afterwards, take the pipe cleaner and the stick, and put it in the glass, so that it is covered. Left it like this for two weeks.
  6. After two weeks, you can see how the sugar has crystallized. Take it from the stick and take it out, letting it drain on toilet paper.
  7. Once the “crystal” is obtained, hook it using the pipe paper on the earring hook. Now it is time that you let your creativity flow and you add the desired elements and decoration!
