Abstract
Geometry is around us. Geometric figures are almost in all parts we can imagine: buildings, road signs or even crockery are part of the geometric world. Through this practical example learners will understand the importance and applicability of geometrical knowledge, thus, mathematical knowledge, in our daily life, developing simple calculations as well as geometrical understanding.
Through designing and developing their own geometrical lamp, learners will be able to understand the link between mathematics and art, since this activity means following some mathematical rules but also creating a personalized object, selecting the appropriate length, width as well as colours. As used materials will be recycled ones, learners will be able to develop ecological sensitivity also. This activity can be developed individually by learners or as a group activity, and it is focused on demonstrating the importance and applicability of mathematics in our daily life, by creating (designing and decorating) a geometric lamp using recycled materials.
Learning Outcomes
The learners will learn how to use mathematics, and more in depth, geometry, in order to make a daily use lamp.
- Identify mathematical knowledge by recognizing different geometrical figures and developing simple mathematical activities.
- How to organize group-work
- How to create a geometric lamp
- Develop mathematic skills
- Improve your creativity
- Develop engineering competences
- Manage time and resources (for achieving objectives)
- Improve social skills such as leadership, organizational conscience or communication.
Other Instructions
In 8 simple steps you will be able to create your geometric lamp out of your design:
- Take a piece of cardboard and build a pentagon on it. Remember that the pentagon should have all its sides of equal size. In order to build a standard geometric lamp, 8cm is a good length for each side. Afterwards, cut the pentagon with the cutter.
- Take a new piece of cardboard and make a strip of 4 cms width and 40 cms (8cmsx5sides) length. In order to make a standard lamp, you should make 8 strips of these characteristics.
- Take each strike and helping yourself with a ruler, divide each of them in 8cms length fragments. Each strike should be, in this way, divided into 5 fragments.
- Take the cutter and without cutting it totally, take it over the marks you have done before. The cardboard should be divided into 5 equal parts, which act as hinges.
- Afterwards, build a pentagon with them. Repeat this process with all the strikes you have cutted.
- Take the cardboard pentagon and make an orifice on it, of the size of the lamp holder.
- Take the carb board pentagon and helping yourself with invisible glue, paste the pentagon strikes in a way that tips do not match between them.
- Once you have it built, take the paints and decorate it the way you like. The suggested color is black, since it helps to create such an interesting light once the light bulb is on!
