Abstract
Fractals are mathematical constructs that have self-similarity, that is, they look the same at different levels as can be seen in successive magnifications of a fractal set. In this challenge, students will learn about the basic mathematical concept behind fractals and will generate artistic fractal images using an online tool.
This activity should be developed in groups of 2 or 3 learners. Teachers should help maintain the motivation of the learners particularly when they are struggling with the mathematical concept or the online tool.

The most well-known fractal, the Mandelbrot set
Learning Outcomes
Skills and Competences
The learners can develop the following skills and competences:
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Leadership
- Communication and presentation skills
- Use web applications
Knowledge
The following knowledge can be gathered by the learners:
- Basic principles of fractal mathematics
- Basic principles of art
Other Instructions
1. Select a fractal 2. Change the parameters and see the resulting image. 3. If you find an image that you like, export it as PNG and write down (can be on a text file or other) the values of the parameters. 4. Select the 3 best images.
